Historic Portage Theater Has A New Owner Who Plans To Revive It As A Community Space
Chris Bauman purchased the long-vacant Portage Theater in Chicago for $25,000 and aims to revitalize it as a community center. His vision includes offering concerts, film screenings, and various performances, catering to a diverse audience. In addition to addressing over $500,000 in back taxes, Bauman plans to meet with community organizers to discuss the theater's future. The Portage Theater has a rich history, having served as a venue for community events since its closure as a cinema in 2001, but it ceased operations entirely in 2018. Bauman intends to establish the Portage Theater Foundation, which will involve local organizations in hosting events and maintaining the venue.
He has communicated with city officials regarding existing building code violations and hopes to resolve these issues by mid-November. Restoration costs are estimated to range from $1 million to $10 million, emphasizing the project's scale. Bauman aims to create a space that resonates with both nostalgic older residents and the younger community.
