Thrive Englewood, Areas 1st Family Housing Development In Over 50 Years, Welcomes Residents

Chicago, ILLocal News

Thrive Englewood, the first new family housing development in Englewood in over 50 years, opened on Wednesday with a welcome home ceremony attended by local officials. The six-story building includes 62 apartments, with more than 80% designated as affordable for families earning up to 60% of the area’s median income. Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized the project's role in revitalizing the neighborhood and restoring its population. The development received over $40 million in city funding, including tax-increment financing and federal tax credit equity. Developers collaborated with Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago to offer on-site financial education to help residents build a stronger financial future.

Thrive Englewood is part of a broader effort to invest in the South Side, with an emphasis on housing as a human right. The project was initiated under the former mayor's Invest South/West Initiative and broke ground in April 2023. A second phase, including additional residential units and community amenities, is planned but lacks a timeline for construction.
