Lewis County Gospel Mission mops up after Chehalis River flooding

Chehalis, WALocal News

In January 2022, the Lewis County Gospel Mission in Chehalis, Washington, suffered significant damage from severe flooding caused by the Chehalis River. The floodwaters reached about three and a half feet inside the building, leading executive director Tricia Ziese to describe the destruction as more akin to an earthquake than a flood. The mission lost roughly 90% of its food supply and most major appliances, including a $5,000 commercial dishwasher. Community members quickly mobilized to help salvage items and support recovery efforts, while the mission continued to provide outreach to the homeless, preparing sack lunches and distributing cold weather supplies. Flood victim Robert Tucker found shelter at a Red Cross location after losing everything in the flood.

The Salvation Army has partnered with the Red Cross, serving over 900 meals to affected individuals across Lewis and Thurston counties. As they navigate the recovery process, the gospel mission is currently accepting monetary donations and plans to welcome food and clothing donations soon. Ziese expressed her gratitude for community support, saying, "You see all the people here that are helping us, and I’m more encouraged than discouraged.
