Bloodworks Northwest issues urgent appeal for donors after inventories dip sharply

Burien, WALocal News

Bloodworks Northwest has issued a pressing appeal for blood donations ahead of the Labor Day weekend, reporting an alarming shortage of Type O blood and platelets. Currently, hospitals are operating with less than one day’s supply of O Positive and O Negative blood, which are crucial for trauma care. Dr. Kirsten Alcorn, Co-Chief Medical Officer, highlighted concerns about the impact of the upcoming holiday on emergency care capabilities. With only 40% of the necessary appointments booked, there are 3,600 open slots available for donations.

Bloodworks encourages donors to bring friends along to double the potential lives saved. To incentivize donations, the organization offers monthly music giveaways and gift card promotions for those who sign up for email alerts. Donating blood is a safe and essential act, with information available on eligibility and locations on the Bloodworks website. Since its founding in 1944, Bloodworks has provided 95% of the blood supply to hospitals in Western Washington and Oregon, emphasizing the critical role of community support in maintaining a reliable blood supply.
