Bloodworks Northwest urgently seeking Type O blood donors amid summer trauma season

Burien, WALocal News

Bloodworks Northwest urgently seeks Type O blood donations as summer trauma season, known as the 100 Deadliest Days, begins. This period sees a rise in traffic accidents and outdoor injuries, putting pressure on local blood supplies. Dr. Kirsten Alcorn, Co-Chief Medical Officer at Bloodworks Northwest, emphasized the critical shortage, stating, “We are facing a critical blood shortage at the worst possible time. ” Type O blood is especially important due to its universal compatibility for emergency transfusions.

Bloodworks reports over 14,000 open donation appointments in Western Washington and Oregon, encouraging community members to donate. As an incentive, donors can enter a raffle for prizes, including a $3,000 gift card and a weekend getaway. Bloodworks Northwest has supported 95% of Pacific Northwest hospitals since 1944, providing vital services and research in blood health. Community participation in blood donation is crucial during this high-demand season to ensure patient care.
