Homelessness advocates take City of Buriens sleeping ban to appeals court

Burien, WALocal News

The Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness has filed an appeal against Burien's ordinance banning public sleeping, which a King County Superior Court recently upheld. The plaintiffs, represented by the Northwest Justice Project, argue that the ordinance violates protections under the Washington State Constitution. In her statement, Alison Eisinger, Director of the Coalition, highlighted the human costs of such policies, referencing the death of plaintiff Beth Hale as a tragic reminder. Hale's passing underscores the urgency of addressing homelessness effectively. Lead attorney Scott Crain emphasized that municipal policies must not infringe on residents' constitutional rights.

The appeal seeks to overturn the lower court's ruling and affirm protections for all Washingtonians. The case reflects a broader struggle over how cities manage homelessness and affordable housing issues. Advocates hope the appellate court will recognize the need for humane solutions to homelessness.
