45 speak out on zoning changes Burien City Council mulls public safety tax at Mondays meeting

Burien, WALocal News

The Burien City Council convened on June 16, 2025, to address pressing local issues, primarily zoning changes and a vehicle license fee increase. If approved, the new fee would double to $40, generating an estimated $1. 45 million for street and infrastructure maintenance. Public comments revealed strong opposition, with 45 residents expressing concerns that increased density would exacerbate existing limitations on stormwater, sewer, and electricity services. Advocates for the zoning changes argued that they are essential for expanding the housing supply and preventing urban sprawl.

The council will deliberate on these matters further at their next meeting on June 30. In another update, the SR 509 extension will soon implement tolls, with rates between $1. 20 and $2. 40 per trip. This extension is part of a broader effort to enhance transportation infrastructure while addressing local community needs.

The outcome of these discussions will significantly shape Burien's urban development and fiscal strategies.
