Port of Seattle Commissioners demand transparency, fair treatment in SEA Airport detentions

On May 23, 2025, the Port of Seattle Commission raised alarms regarding reports of prolonged detentions by U. S. Customs and Border Protection at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The commissioners underscored that such practices not only generate serious concerns but also erode public trust. They recognize immigration enforcement as a federal matter but assert their role in advocating for fair treatment and transparency for detainees.

To address these issues, they have scheduled a meeting with CBP local field office leadership to seek clarity on communication standards and care protocols for detainees held for extended periods. The statement cited CBP's own National Standards, which stipulate that detainees should generally not be held for more than 72 hours. The commissioners reaffirmed their commitment to actions that uphold dignity, justice, and transparency at SEA Airport. Officials noted no specific incidents were referenced but pledged to press for accountability. The situation highlights ongoing tensions between local advocacy and federal immigration enforcement practices.
