Burien City Council meets new Police Chief, discusses arts, zoning codes and more at Monday nights meeting
The Burien City Council convened on September 9, 2024, introducing new Police Chief Tom Calabrese, who is prioritizing public safety discussions with local residents. Councilmember Linda Akey highlighted the recent opening of a new synthetic running track and mini soccer pitch at Sylvester Middle School, a project funded by local businesses and state resources. Public comments during the meeting expressed concerns over inaccuracies in zoning updates, emphasizing the importance of the shoreline master plan for Lake Burien’s waterfront. One speaker urged the council to hold the county accountable for clearing a homeless camp in the courthouse parking lot by September 30. The council also discussed high Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) permitting fees, with suggestions to reduce costs to encourage affordable housing development.
Unanimously, the council approved the Arts Commission Work Plan, aimed at supporting local arts initiatives and community events. Last year, the funding helped support free concerts and community festivals, reinforcing the council's commitment to cultural engagement. These discussions and approvals reflect Burien's proactive approach to addressing community concerns as the city prepares for the Seattle World Cup in 2026.
