City of Burien begins Critical Areas Ordinance update as part of 2044 Comprehensive Plan

Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien is advancing an update to its Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO) to comply with the Washington Growth Management Act. This update is essential for implementing Burien's 2044 Comprehensive Plan and is being spearheaded by the Community Development Department. State law requires local governments to periodically review and adjust critical areas regulations to reflect environmental priorities. The revised CAO will dictate how development occurs in sensitive areas, including wetlands and flood-prone zones, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for the Planning Commission and City Council in 2025 to discuss the update and gather community feedback.

The city emphasizes the importance of public input, encouraging residents to participate in discussions and reach out to planners directly. This initiative reflects Burien's commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. Compliance with state regulations will help safeguard local ecosystems while accommodating future growth.
