City of SeaTac offers to buy North SeaTac Park from Port of Seattle, pledging 20 million

Burien, WALocal News

SeaTac officials have made a significant move by submitting an offer to purchase North SeaTac Park from the Port of Seattle, pledging $20 million for future improvements. This proposal was announced during a City Council meeting on May 13, 2025, following a commitment made in the city's inaugural State of the City address. City Manager Jonathan Young confirmed that the offer was sent to Port Commissioners and CEO Steve Metruck, proposing the formation of a nonprofit foundation to oversee the funds. The focus will be on enhancing the park's beautification and accessibility to benefit the community for generations. Young highlighted the city's intent to preserve the park's recreational value amid concerns about potential development for aviation facilities.

A Joint Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled for May 20 to discuss the offer further. A decision on the park's status as surplus to the Port's needs is anticipated in the third quarter of this year. Activists have raised concerns about the park’s future, as preservation efforts gain momentum.
