Burien, WALocal News

After 30 years of dedicated service, Scott Babcock retires from his position as band instructor at Highline High School, leaving a lasting legacy on his students. Former student Hailey Smith recounted how Babcock's invitation to join the jazz band changed her life, illustrating his ability to recognize and nurture talent. Babcock's teaching philosophy centered around experiencing music rather than rote memorization, creating a welcoming atmosphere for students. He moved from New York to Washington State, earning his teaching certification from the University of Washington before starting his journey in Burien. Post-retirement, he aims to explore music as a personal passion and spend quality time with his family, while also continuing to play tennis.

Babcock's influence extends beyond the classroom, as he plans to remain active in the local music scene. His retirement signifies not just the end of his teaching career but also a new chapter in his life dedicated to personal growth and enjoyment. The community will miss his contributions but can look forward to his continued presence in music.
