Seattle Southside Chamber warns of growing tariff strain on local businesses

Burien, WALocal News

The Seattle Southside Chamber of Commerce is alerting local businesses to prepare for significant disruptions caused by escalating federal tariffs, which can reach as high as 145%. Samantha Le, the Chamber's President and CEO, outlined the adverse effects these tariffs have on various industries, including steel, automotive, and pharmaceuticals. Many companies face sudden cost increases that cannot be passed on due to existing contracts, as well as delays in supplier shipments and increased customs costs. Le noted that the complexity of these changes makes them hard to predict, affecting even businesses that do not directly import goods. In response, the Washington State Department of Commerce has launched a new Tariff Information and Resource Guide to provide businesses with essential data and strategies.

The Chamber is collaborating with the U. S. Chamber of Commerce and state officials to ensure that the concerns of South King County businesses are addressed in policy discussions. Business owners experiencing challenges related to tariffs are encouraged to share their stories with the Chamber to contribute to regional advocacy efforts. This proactive approach aims to equip local businesses with the necessary resources to navigate an uncertain economic landscape.
