Port of Seattle offering total of 600,000 for South King County environmental projects

Burien, WALocal News

The Port of Seattle has announced the fourth cycle of its Environmental Grants Program, allocating $600,000 to support community-led environmental projects in neighborhoods around Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Organizations can seek funding of $20,000 for single-year projects or multi-year support of up to $60,000. The program encourages initiatives such as public space enhancements, equipment installations, and efforts aimed at environmental stewardship. This funding addresses historical inequities faced by communities in South King County, where marginalized groups have experienced disproportionate environmental impacts. Armaye Eshete, Executive Director of Serve Ethiopians of Washington, emphasized the program's role in meeting community needs through outdoor activities and habitat restoration.

The Environmental Grants Program is part of the South King County Community Impact Fund, which aims to invest $10 million in historically underserved communities between 2019 and 2024. This initiative underscores the importance of equity-based partnerships, ensuring that public port benefits reach those who need them most. Proposals for funding must be submitted by October 30, 2023.
