Lane and ramp closures on SR 509, SR 516 and local roads in south King County continue this week

Burien, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has informed the public about ongoing nighttime lane and ramp closures on SR 509 and SR 516, along with local road closures in Burien, Des Moines, SeaTac, and Kent, continuing until the morning of April 12, 2025. These closures are essential for crews to carry out electrical work on SR 516 and to install concrete barriers and stripe roadways on SR 509. Motorists can expect specific ramp closures each night, with signed detours in place to mitigate disruptions. This work is a critical part of the SR 509 Completion Project, which aims to enhance transportation infrastructure in the area. The project will ultimately construct a new tolled highway that connects I-5 to South 188th Street near the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The first segment, between I-5 and 24th Avenue South, is slated for completion in summer 2025, alongside a new tunnel at the SR 516 interchange. Overall, the entire project is scheduled for completion by 2029, promising significant improvements to regional travel and freight movement. This development is a vital step in addressing critical transportation gaps in Washington's highway network.
