Fingerprint system levy on ballot in April 22 special election

King County voters are gearing up for a significant decision in a special election on April 22, 2025, as they consider Proposition No. 1, which seeks to renew funding for the Regional Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Proposed by the King County Council, this measure would authorize a seven-year property tax levy beginning in 2026, with a tax rate of $0. 0275 per $1,000 of assessed property value. For homeowners, this translates to a maximum annual cost of around $24.

The levy is designed to replace a previous voter-approved measure that expires at the end of 2024, ensuring the continuity of essential forensic fingerprint and palmprint identification services. These services are vital for law enforcement agencies in King County, aiding in criminal investigations and evidence analysis. If the proposition is approved, it will also include limits on annual tax increases and exemptions for eligible seniors, disabled persons, and veterans. Furthermore, the AFIS Advisory Committee's oversight role will continue, ensuring transparency and accountability in the program's operations.
