Fundraiser launched for Burien Tekerz Robotics team headed to PNW Championship
The Tekerz Robotics team, based in Burien, is preparing for the Pacific Northwest Championship, which is essential for their chance to compete in the prestigious FIRST Robotics World Championship in Houston. Over the past 18 months, the team has faced numerous challenges, including a theft of tools worth $5,000 and the loss of support from Highline Public Schools, which has left them without funding and a workspace. Coach David Dammann addressed the dire need for community support during a recent school board meeting, highlighting that the team is no longer recognized as a district program. Team member Zoë Bryant passionately described the program's impact on her life, emphasizing the skills she's gained, including perseverance and teamwork. In light of their financial hurdles, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to raise $15,000 for travel and equipment expenses.
Any leftover funds will be allocated to support future seasons, as uncertainty looms. Their experiences reveal the crucial role of STEM programs in empowering students and fostering essential life skills. The Tekerz team's resolve serves as an inspiring testament to the power of collaboration and community support.
