Burien Supports Transgender Community Members

Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the transgender and gender-diverse community, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in light of recent national challenges to transgender rights. The city’s actions were emphasized during the observance of International Transgender Day of Visibility, with the Burien City Council formally expressing support on February 24. This initiative is particularly relevant as federal government actions threaten to undermine protections for transgender individuals, prompting city officials to advocate for their rights. City Manager Adolfo Bailon asserted that fostering a safe and welcoming environment is essential for all residents to thrive. In addition to reaffirming support, the city is developing new inclusive language guidelines aimed at improving communication and reducing unintentional harm.

The city is dedicated to ensuring all employees work in an environment free from harassment and discrimination. Looking ahead, Burien plans to maintain its momentum through annual community events like the ceremonial raising of the Pride Progress flag. Such engagements reflect the city’s ongoing dedication to diversity and inclusion.
