New Paid Forest Steward Program

Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien has launched a Paid Forest Steward Program designed to foster community engagement in the restoration and care of local parks and urban forests. This initiative, part of the Green Burien Partnership, aims to empower individuals from underrepresented communities by providing them with training, resources, and financial compensation for their efforts. Participants will commit to working an average of seven hours per month for two years, earning a total stipend of $4,600. The program prioritizes applicants who live close to specific parks, such as Arbor Lake Park and Salmon Creek Park, ensuring that those most invested in these areas have the opportunity to participate. City officials, including PaRCS Director Carolyn Hope, highlight the importance of making urban forestry accessible to everyone.

The program not only aims to improve local green spaces but also to cultivate a sense of belonging among residents. Interested community members are encouraged to apply as the application process remains open until positions are filled. This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing community stewardship and environmental restoration in Burien.
