Statement from City of Burien

Burien, WALocal News

On March 31, 2023, the Burien Condo Association enforced a new policy banning overnight camping on the Burien Library and City Hall property. This prohibition is part of an updated code of conduct that aims to enhance the use and management of the shared civic building, which has been operational since 2010. City officials are aware that some individuals have moved their tents to a nearby city-owned property, where camping is not prohibited due to its classification. Despite not having a city-wide ban on camping in public areas—aside from designated parks—the new enforcement reflects a commitment to addressing community concerns over public spaces. Service providers are working diligently to find shelter and housing solutions for those impacted by this policy change.

The Burien Condo Association, which includes representatives from both the City of Burien and the King County Library System, plays a crucial role in managing these regulations. The city is currently exploring various options to respond to the situation and ensure community needs are met. This development underscores the ongoing challenges faced by local authorities in balancing public space usage with the needs of vulnerable populations.
