City of Burien Denounces Theft of Pride Flags

Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien has denounced the theft of its Pride flag, which was stolen on June 25, 2023, along with the rope that secured it to the pole. This incident follows a previous theft of Pride flags in downtown Burien, raising concerns about the safety and respect for the LGBTQIA+ community. The flags were installed to celebrate Pride Month, a time dedicated to honoring the dignity and visibility of LGBTQIA+ individuals, as well as commemorating the Stonewall uprising that began on June 28, 1969. Unfortunately, the city will not be able to reinstall the flag before the end of June due to the need for special equipment. Mayor Sofia Aragon expressed strong condemnation of the theft, asserting that such acts of hatred have no place in Burien.

This year, the Burien City Council continued its tradition of supporting Pride Month by issuing an official proclamation. The city remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment for all its residents. Those with information about the theft are encouraged to contact the Burien Police Department.
