Fireworks Not Allowed within Burien City Limits

Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien has issued a reminder that the possession and discharge of illegal fireworks are forbidden within its limits, with penalties designed to deter violations. The fines start at $500 for a first offense and can escalate to $5,000 for subsequent violations, impacting both individuals and property owners under a social host ordinance. This ordinance places liability on property owners for any fireworks discharged on their property, even if they were not present. As July 4th approaches, Burien Police will increase patrols to enforce these restrictions, emphasizing public safety. Fire Chief Mike Marrs highlighted the risks associated with fireworks, noting that they can lead to injuries or property damage, especially in forecasted hotter and drier conditions.

Additionally, the loud noises from fireworks can cause anxiety for those with PTSD and distress for pets and wildlife. To promote compliance, the King County Fire District #2 is distributing yard signs encouraging respect for the fireworks ban. Residents are urged to explore alternative celebrations, such as attending the 100th anniversary of Burien’s Independence Day Parade.
