City Addresses Sheriffs Refusal to Enforce Ordinance

Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien is confronting the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) after the Sheriff advised deputies against enforcing Burien’s public camping ordinance. This refusal is perceived as a breach of the interlocal agreement for law enforcement services between Burien and King County. The city emphasizes that any disputes regarding policy should be negotiated, not unilaterally dictated by the Sheriff. The ordinance in question, initially adopted in 2023 and recently amended, aims to balance public safety with humane treatment of the unhoused. Burien asserts that the ordinance does not impose greater restrictions than its predecessors but clarifies where individuals can rest when shelter options are unavailable.

If individuals decline offered shelter and remain on public property, they may face misdemeanor charges. The city remains committed to outreach and service connections before enforcement actions are taken. To address this situation, Burien intends to work with an Oversight Committee to explore remedies based on their existing contract with King County.
