Response to King County Sheriff Press Conference

Burien, WALocal News

Burien has publicly responded to perceived inaccuracies from a King County Sheriff press conference held on March 11, 2024. The city firmly states that it does not aim to criminalize homelessness, clarifying that its municipal code only classifies camping on public property as a crime when adequate shelter or beds are accessible. Burien underscores its intention to foster a collaborative relationship with the King County Sheriff’s Office, despite past misunderstandings. The city has been proactive in discussions about amending its municipal code based on input from the Burien Police Chief and King County legal counsel. Burien's efforts to enhance service availability for the unhoused have been ongoing, although it recently terminated a contract with a service provider due to inadequate outcomes.

The city also clarifies that the map outlining camping regulations does not restrict individuals from "living" in Burien but aims to protect sensitive areas like schools and daycares. Burien insists that it has never claimed to eliminate service providers and is committed to assisting the unhoused population. The statement serves to correct misinformation and reinforce the city’s dedication to addressing homelessness compassionately and effectively.
