City of Burien Awarded 1 Million to Support Family Shelter

Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien has received a $1 million grant from King County to support the redevelopment of the Mary’s Place family shelter, a critical initiative aimed at tackling family homelessness in the region. This funding will enable the shelter to expand its capacity to over 200 family members each night, providing much-needed support to those in need. The project, in partnership with Mercy Housing Northwest, will also feature 90 units of new, permanently affordable housing, enhancing the community's resources for families. The Burien City Council has actively supported this endeavor, passing resolutions and fast-tracking zoning ordinances to ensure timely access to funding. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal's inclusion of the project on her 2024 Community Project Funding list secured an additional $1 million, further bolstering the initiative.

City Manager Adolfo Bailon expressed optimism about the development, which aligns with the city's vision for safe and supportive shelter. This project signifies a robust commitment from local leaders to address the pressing issue of homelessness. Overall, it reflects a collaborative effort to create a more sustainable and supportive community for families facing hardship.
