Area native and Marine One pilot Nels Dahlgard takes flight fighting fires with CAL FIRE
Nels Dahlgard, a retired Lt. Col. from the U. S. Marine Corps, has embarked on a new mission as a Forestry Fire Pilot with CAL FIRE in California, following an impressive military career.
Growing up in Normandy Park and graduating from Mount Rainier High School in 1998, Dahlgard brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having flown the Marine One helicopter in support of two Presidents. He recently completed his first full fire season, actively participating in firefighting efforts during the January Eaton Fire, which endangered homes in Altadena. Dahlgard finds deep fulfillment in his work, stating, "Flying for CAL FIRE gives me the opportunity to continue serving — this time protecting people and property here at home. " His current responsibilities involve operating the S-70i “Fire Hawk” helicopter, which is designed for rapid response and firefighting missions. He acknowledges the critical nature of teamwork in this high-stakes environment, crediting CAL FIRE for fostering a supportive atmosphere.
Dahlgard now resides in Temecula with his wife and pets, enjoying the transition from military service to public safety. His story reflects the ongoing commitment to community service and the vital role of aviation in combating California's wildfire crisis.
