Sen. Karen Keiser, a veteran member of the Washington State Legislature, announced her retirement on March 5, 2024, after nearly 30 years of dedicated service. Representing the 33rd Legislative District, she has been a leading voice for health care access, worker protections, and women’s rights. Keiser's pivotal role in implementing the Affordable Care Act helped Washington become a model for health care reform, significantly increasing coverage for residents. In 2017, she championed the Paid Family and Medical Leave program, ensuring that nearly 470,000 workers could take time off for family or medical reasons without financial strain.

Senate Majority Leader Andy Billig remarked on her legacy, noting that her mentorship has shaped many new legislators. Keiser's departure will leave a notable gap in the Senate, where she has served as President Pro Tempore since 2018. Her contributions have had a lasting impact on the lives of working families across Washington. As the state prepares for her exit, the political landscape of the Senate will undoubtedly shift.
