Kennedy Catholic High School (KCHS) articulated its disappointment in a statement released on December 1, 2023, following the Burien City Council's decision to approve a Pallet Village homeless encampment without consulting the school community. The encampment, located at S. 136th Street & 4th Ave S. , was approved by a narrow 4-3 vote on November 27, 2023. KCHS President/Principal Matthew Mohs emphasized the school's commitment to engaging with local officials and expressed frustration over the lack of response to their outreach efforts.

He stated that the community should have been involved in discussions prior to the final decision, highlighting the responsibility of elected officials to consider local stakeholders. KCHS aims to foster collaboration by offering to host a public forum with various governmental organizations and the operator of the village. The school recognizes the complexities of the homelessness issue and intends to approach it with dignity and respect for all parties involved. By advocating for ongoing dialogue and involvement in decision-making, KCHS seeks to address the needs of both its community and the unhoused population effectively. This proactive and inclusive approach showcases the school's commitment to social responsibility and community engagement.
