City of Burien Denounces Theft of Pride Flags

Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien faced a troubling incident on June 25, 2023, when its Pride flag, raised at City Hall earlier that month, was stolen, along with the rope securing it. This theft occurred in the context of recent similar incidents involving Pride flags in downtown Burien, raising concerns about the treatment of LGBTQIA+ symbols in the area. Mayor Sofia Aragon denounced the act, affirming that such hatred has no place in Burien and that the city is committed to supporting its LGBTQIA+ community. The Pride flags were part of a broader initiative to celebrate Pride Month, which honors the dignity and visibility of LGBTQIA+ individuals and commemorates the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Due to the need for special equipment to reinstall the flag, it will not be raised again before the end of June, disappointing many in the community.

The Burien Police Department is actively seeking information on the thefts to bring awareness and justice to these incidents. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ communities and the importance of solidarity during Pride Month. Burien City Council's annual proclamation supporting Pride Month further emphasizes the city's commitment to inclusivity and respect for all identities.
