City Addresses Sheriffs Refusal to Enforce Ordinance

Burien, WALocal News

The King County Sheriff’s Office's directive against enforcing Burien's public camping ordinance has prompted a significant response from the city's leadership. This refusal is seen as a violation of the interlocal agreement that stipulates negotiation in the event of policy disagreements between the city and the county. The public camping ordinance, amended on March 4, 2024, was designed to address the needs of the unhoused while ensuring public safety. Burien's City Manager points out that the ordinance does not increase limitations on the unhoused beyond what previously existed, and the Sheriff’s stance raises critical questions about the politicization of law enforcement. The city is committed to outreach and providing services before any enforcement actions are taken, emphasizing its responsibility to assist vulnerable populations.

The Oversight Committee will be engaged to explore remedies under the existing contract to resolve the conflict. This situation highlights the ongoing tensions between local governance and county-level law enforcement decisions. Burien aims to uphold its policies while ensuring that public safety remains a priority.
