Burien City Council Candidates Tackle Key Issues at Candidate Forum
On October 7, 2025, the League of Women Voters organized the Burien City Council Candidate Forum at the Burien Public Library. Five of the eight candidates running in the November 4 General Election participated, discussing their platforms and visions for the city. Moderator Vicci Rudin mentioned that three candidates were absent and chose not to send representatives. Candidates highlighted issues like housing affordability and government accountability, with each sharing personal stories that shaped their perspectives. Hugo Garcia, an incumbent, focused on community service and economic opportunity, while Jessica Ivey emphasized the importance of new leadership.
Sam Mendez spoke about his experiences with generational trauma and healthcare access, and Sarah Moore, the current deputy mayor, expressed her deep connection to Burien. Four council positions are contested, with candidates committed to addressing pressing community needs. The forum provided a platform for candidates to engage with voters and articulate their plans for Burien's future.
