500,000 in Port of Seattle funding available for community-led environmental improvements

Burien, WALocal News

The Port of Seattle is now accepting applications for $500,000 in funding aimed at environmental improvement projects in communities around Sea-Tac Airport and South King County. Eligible organizations can apply for up to $20,000 in one-year grants or $60,000 for multi-year projects, with proposals due by October 31, 2025. This funding supports initiatives such as habitat restoration, environmental education, and public art installations, aiming to enhance local green spaces. The program addresses the historical environmental injustices faced by marginalized communities in the area. Since its launch in 2020, the South King and Port Communities Fund has fostered partnerships with BIPOC-led organizations and significantly increased funding opportunities.

In 2024, the Port Commission increased funding from $10 million to $14 million, demonstrating a commitment to equity and environmental improvements. The program also reduces the match requirement for recipients and expands eligible areas for funding. Hasegawa stated that the expanded funding reflects a dedication to the health and vitality of the region.
