Marys Place and Mercy Housing break ground on new Burien family shelter and housing campus
Mary’s Place and Mercy Housing Northwest broke ground on a family shelter and affordable housing campus in Burien on September 19, 2025, designed to address the homelessness crisis in Washington state. The four-story project will provide emergency shelter for 200 family members each night and 90 units of permanently affordable housing, with 34 units reserved for very low-income families. Governor Bob Ferguson highlighted the urgent need for affordable housing, noting that many families currently struggle to find shelter. The campus will feature essential wraparound services, including health care, trauma-informed support, and recreational facilities developed in partnership with local sports organizations. This project represents a significant shift in addressing family homelessness by co-locating emergency shelter with permanent housing solutions.
Mary’s Place has a proven track record of helping families transition from homelessness to stability. Completion is expected by mid-2027, and leaders hope to replicate this model in other communities facing similar challenges. The collaboration between public and private sectors aims to ensure every family has a safe place to call home.
