City of Burien launches zoning proposal process for area north of NERA, seeking community input

Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien has initiated a zoning proposal to shape future development in the area between South 138th and South 128th Streets along Des Moines Memorial Drive. Known as the “North of NERA Rezone Project,” this effort aims to eliminate barriers to job creation while also supporting existing residents. City officials are actively engaging with the community to gather input on alternative zoning proposals, which will be presented to the Planning Commission and ultimately the City Council. Community members can participate by emailing their comments, attending Planning Commission meetings, and reviewing updates sent to property owners in the project area. The city has planned outreach events, including an information table at the Burien Farmers Market on September 18 and a Planning Commission meeting on September 24.

The Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing before making recommendations to the City Council. Any approved changes will necessitate amendments to the Burien Municipal Code and Official Zoning Map. This zoning proposal reflects Burien's commitment to fostering economic growth while addressing community needs.
