Lane and ramp closures on I-5, SR 516 and SR 509 in south King County continue Sept. 8-14
The SR 509 Completion Project will result in ongoing lane and ramp closures on SR 509, SR 516, and I-5 until September 14, significantly impacting Burien drivers. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) confirmed that the closures are necessary for road paving and signage installation. Specific nightly closure schedules are provided for each affected route, with detours set for drivers. The project aims to build a new 3-mile tolled highway segment connecting I-5 to South 188th Street near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The first segment opened in June, with a tunnel under I-5 completed in July.
The final stage includes the remaining 2 miles of the expressway, expected to be finished by 2029. This initiative is part of WSDOT’s broader Puget Sound Gateway Program, which addresses critical gaps in Washington's highway network. Improved infrastructure will facilitate better traffic flow and enhance local connectivity.
