WEATHER Burien activates cooling center as heat advisory bears down
A heat advisory will blanket Burien from 11 a. m. Friday, Aug. 22, through 5 p. m.
Tuesday, Aug. 26. In response, city officials will activate the Burien Severe Weather Shelter at Highline United Methodist Church to provide relief for residents. The National Weather Service cautions that the heat significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those without proper cooling or hydration. The cooling center will operate daily from 10 a.
m. to 8 p. m. until Wednesday, Aug. 27.
Local authorities highlight the shelter's role as a safe, air-conditioned refuge during the hottest hours of the day. Meteorologists predict a return to cooler temperatures by Wednesday. This proactive measure aims to safeguard vulnerable populations in south King County from health risks associated with prolonged heat. Community members are encouraged to utilize this resource as temperatures rise.
