Lane and ramp closures on I-5, SR 516 and SR 509 in south King County continue through Aug. 4

Burien, WALocal News

The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced lane and ramp closures on I-5, SR 516, and SR 509 in south King County through the morning of August 4, 2025. These closures are necessary for contractor crews to stripe roadways, pave sections, and perform electrical work. Nightly closures will take place on I-5, affecting multiple lanes and specific ramps, while SR 516 and SR 509 will also see lane and ramp closures during the same period. The SR 509 Completion Project, part of WSDOT's broader Puget Sound Gateway Program, aims to construct new tolled highway segments to enhance regional connectivity. This project includes building three miles of new highway and is set for completion by 2029, with significant portions already opened.

The portion between I-5 and 24th Ave South opened on June 28, and a new tunnel at the SR 516 interchange opened on July 16. Local drivers should expect delays and follow signed detours in place during the closures. This infrastructure improvement is vital for finishing critical links in Washington's highway and freight networks.
