Holy mackerel! Burien angler lands state record blue rockfish near Neah Bay

Burien, WALocal News

Russell Skurski of Burien set a new Washington state sport fishing record for blue rockfish with a 5. 16-pound catch off Clallam County on June 26, 2025. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) confirmed the record, celebrating Skurski's achievement on social media. Blue rockfish, officially separated from deacon rockfish in 2015, can be recognized by their unique dark blotches. Skurski's photos illustrated the excitement of weighing and measuring the fish at Sekiu port.

More than 30 species of rockfish populate Washington waters, making it a popular destination for anglers. WDFW promotes awareness of rockfish species through their website, which includes a species identification guide. Skurski's catch not only showcases his angling skills but also highlights the rich fishing opportunities available in the region. This record-setting event contributes to the local fishing culture and encourages more enthusiasts to explore Washington's waters.
