Miller Creek restoration work prompts 10-day closure of Des Moines Memorial Drive in Burien

Burien, WALocal News

Des Moines Memorial Drive in Burien will close to all but local traffic from July 14 to July 23 for the Miller Creek Stream Restoration Project. This significant initiative aims to restore approximately 1,200 feet of Miller Creek, removing fish passage blockages and enhancing native habitats. Key improvements include the installation of large woody debris and native plantings, which are essential for local wildlife. The project is a collaboration between the City of Burien and local and regional agencies, highlighting a commitment to environmental conservation. Detour routes will be clearly marked to assist affected drivers during the closure period.

While officials acknowledge the temporary inconvenience, they emphasize the substantial long-term benefits for salmon recovery and stormwater resilience. This restoration will also enhance public amenities along the Miller Creek Trail, supporting recreational use. The initiative represents a proactive step toward long-term environmental sustainability in the region.
