Highline Public Schools’ Maritime High School, which opened in September 2021, is pivotal in preparing students for careers in Washington's maritime sector. The school uses a project-based learning approach that combines traditional subjects with maritime skills to develop students' academic and life skills. Students can choose between two distinct pathways: a Marine Science program that emphasizes ecosystems and community connections, and a Vessel Operations pathway that allows them to earn community college credits through internships. Principal Jamila Gordon emphasized the program's unique exposure to maritime careers, which includes mentorship and hands-on experiences. The Washington Maritime Federation reported that the maritime sector supported 174,300 jobs and $14.

4 billion in labor income in 2022, highlighting the industry's significance. With many maritime professionals nearing retirement, there is an urgent need for skilled workers to fill these positions. As Maritime High School prepares for its inaugural graduating class in 2025, it is set to introduce a Marine Construction pathway in the 2024-2025 academic year, further expanding student opportunities.
