ICE raids prompt cancellation of July 26 Folklrico Festival in Burien

Burien, WALocal News

Joyas Mestizas canceled the 2025 Pacific Northwest Folklórico Festival, initially set for July 26 in Burien, due to concerns regarding immigration enforcement and the political climate affecting immigrant safety. The decision follows recent U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids that have heightened community fears. In a statement, the organization expressed their anger over the impact of racist immigration policies that disrupt families.

Established in 1988, Joyas Mestizas has worked to honor Mexican cultural heritage through folklórico dance, making the festival a significant local event since its inception in 2022. The cancellation reflects a broader commitment to community safety and resistance, rooted in the organization’s historical ties to freedom movements. Joyas Mestizas did not provide a new date or virtual alternative but aims to continue their mission through cultural expression. Local artists and families had relied on this festival for cultural celebration and connection. The community now faces uncertainty as organizers prioritize safety over tradition.
