Bussey House Study Report

Boston, MALocal News

The Captain John Bussey House, located at 1203-1205 Adams Street in Dorchester, is significant due to its association with Revolutionary War officer John Bussey. The structure, dating back to around 1792, retains enough of its original features to reflect its 18th-century origins despite some alterations. As one of Boston's oldest buildings, it stands out in a city where such historical properties are increasingly rare. The first floor was adapted for use as a reading room by the Walter Baker Chocolate Company between 1905 and 1909, which included an architecturally noteworthy Classical Revival storefront. A study report has been prepared to guide the Commission's review of proposed changes, ensuring the landmark's historical integrity is maintained.

Public input is encouraged through an online feedback form, and a hearing is scheduled for July 8, 2025, where residents can voice their opinions. This potential designation is crucial for preserving Boston's historical landscape. The outcome may set a precedent for similar preservation efforts in the region.
