June is Mens Mental Health Awareness Month
The Boston City Council adopted a resolution declaring June as Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and resources dedicated to men's mental health. The resolution asserts that mental health is equally important as physical health and emphasizes the stigma that inhibits men from seeking help. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, approximately 10% of men experience depression, but fewer than half seek treatment. It connects mental health issues to broader societal problems, including violence and poverty, and notes that male-dominated fields, particularly military service, often exacerbate these challenges. Boston hosts several community organizations that provide essential mental health services, including Roslindale Medical & Dental Center and Mattapan Community Health Center.
The resolution calls for a cultural shift towards supporting men in vulnerable situations and stresses the need for dedicated resources. By recognizing June as Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, the Council aims to affirm its commitment to expanding awareness and action on this critical issue. This initiative is a significant step towards promoting community well-being and reducing the stigma surrounding men's mental health.
