Coalition of City and County Governments Across U.S. File Amicus Brief in Opposition to Trump Administrations Termination of CHNV Parole Program
Mayor Michelle Wu has co-led a coalition of over 30 cities and counties in filing an amicus brief with the U. S. Supreme Court to oppose the Trump Administration's termination of the CHNV Parole Program. This program currently supports more than 530,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, allowing them to live and work legally in the U. S.
The coalition argues that revoking their legal status would negatively impact the economic vitality and public safety of cities nationwide. Mayor Wu highlighted that the termination instills fear in communities and undermines public trust. City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune emphasized the importance of immigrant contributions to local society. The amicus brief was a response to the Department of Homeland Security's abrupt announcement, which left many parolees facing deportation without consideration for their homes or jobs. In a related legal case, a preliminary injunction temporarily halted the program's termination, which the federal government is currently appealing.
This coalition's efforts aim to protect the rights of immigrant communities across the country.
