19 Kenton Road Study Report

Boston, MALocal News

19 Kenton Road, built by Isaac Harris Cary between 1843 and 1856, stands as a notable example of early Italianate architecture in Boston. This detached two-family dwelling was initially constructed as an income-producing rental property amid Jamaica Plain's transformation into a streetcar suburb. Cary, a significant figure in local real estate, developed much of the land in the area, making this house one of the earliest surviving examples of its kind. The property also showcases architectural detailing that reflects its Italianate style, which gained popularity during that period. The house is a historic anchor on Kenton Road, a street characterized by mid- to late-nineteenth-century architectural styles.

A public hearing concerning its potential landmark designation is scheduled for June 10, 2025. Community members are encouraged to attend and provide feedback, with written comments accepted through a designated feedback form. The proposed designation aims to protect the historic integrity of the property and its setting.
