Go underwater with this dive team as they inspect Massachusetts bridges

Boston, MALocal News

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation's specialized dive team performs crucial underwater inspections of state bridges, ensuring safety and structural integrity. During a recent inspection of the County Street Bridge over the Ipswich River, divers reported no significant issues but noted minor movement of gunite material. With over 700 structurally deficient bridges in Massachusetts, the need for regular inspections is critical. Bill Colleran, the underwater operations engineer, highlighted the importance of these inspections for public safety. The dive team typically examines each bridge every three years, adapting their frequency based on the bridge's condition.

They face numerous challenges, including cold weather, strong currents, and entanglement hazards. The team has executed about 25 underwater repairs in the last 15 to 20 years, showcasing their capability to address emergency situations. These efforts are vital for maintaining the safety of Massachusetts' aging infrastructure.
