Mayor Wu Announces Expansion of Free Swim Lessons for Youth Recognizes International Water Safety Day on May 15
Mayor Michelle Wu announced $230,000 in grants for free youth swim lessons during International Water Safety Day, emphasizing the city's commitment to water safety education. The Swim Safe initiative has provided lessons to 8,100 children since its launch in summer 2023, aiming to lower drowning rates among youth, particularly those of color. Grant recipients include the YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs, which will offer affordable swim lessons to families. Wu highlighted the importance of making swimming accessible as drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children, with Black children at a higher risk. The city has also invested in upgrading pool facilities, with several city pools reopening in time for summer.
Additionally, the Boston Centers for Youth & Families have successfully hired lifeguards to ensure pool safety. Parents have reported positive experiences with the program, showcasing the community's support for these initiatives. The city aims to empower young residents to engage safely with local pools and beaches.
