Council Approves Grants Supporting Resiliency, Public Safety, and Youth Employment

The Council approved a $1,987,500 Hazard Mitigation Grant to address flood risks in East Boston, unlocking an additional $15 million for construction. This funding supports the East Boston Waterfront–Carlton Wharf and Lewis Mall Resiliency Project, crucial for protecting residents from climate-related displacement. Alongside this, the Council accepted a $58,000 grant from FEMA, aimed at enhancing fire prevention education and safety initiatives for first responders and the public. Furthermore, a $4,149,200 grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development will bolster the YouthWorks Program, providing summer and school-year employment opportunities for over 1,000 low-income and at-risk youth. Participants will gain valuable experience in industries such as biotechnology and education, through partnerships with local organizations.
