Streets Cabinet Opens Applications for Boston E-Bikes Incentive Program

Boston, MALocal News

The Boston Streets Cabinet has officially opened applications for the next round of the Boston E-Bikes Incentive Program, aimed at providing financial assistance for e-bike purchases to seniors, income-eligible residents, and adults with disabilities. This initiative seeks to improve transportation access, promote sustainable commuting, and address historical disparities in mobility. In its first year, the program received more than 1,200 applications, successfully issuing 600 vouchers that enabled participants to save time and better access jobs and services. Eligible e-bikes must feature a safety-certified rechargeable battery and pedal assist, making them accessible for individuals with mobility challenges. Vouchers will range from $800 to $1,500 for standard e-bikes and from $2,000 to $5,000 for adaptive e-bikes, with recipients also receiving $150 for safety equipment.

The pilot program is funded by $1. 5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act, targeting residents disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Applications are open until April 30, 2025, and the Boston Bikes team will conduct free "Try an E-Bike" events to assist with testing bikes and completing applications. This comprehensive approach not only enhances mobility but also fosters a shift towards greener transportation solutions in Boston.
