Planning Department Advances New Affordable Housing in Allston, Downtown, and Mission Hill
The Boston Planning Department is advancing a major initiative aimed at enhancing affordable housing and community development across the city. This month, the department received approval for five new projects, which collectively will create 171 residential units, including 107 that are income-restricted. These developments will also generate around 584 construction jobs and over 1,052 permanent positions, demonstrating a strong commitment to job creation alongside housing. Among the key projects is the transformation of the 15 Court Square office building into 80 new homes, part of the city's Office to Residential Conversion Program, which aims to repurpose vacant office spaces. In Allston, a project will deliver 43 income-restricted homeownership units, while Mission Hill will see the construction of 48 new homes on previously vacant land.
Each project emphasizes sustainability, complying with the Stretch Energy Code and incorporating features like bike parking and community gardens. The Planning Department also introduced a Planning and Design Academy to empower local residents in shaping their neighborhoods. This comprehensive approach aims to foster a more resilient, affordable, and equitable Boston.
